Bunbury Musical Comedy Group Inc. is a community based not-for-profit amateur theatre group with a proud 62-year history in Bunbury.
The group was founded in 1960 by a group of friends who enjoyed singing together and musical theatre.
It has survived by producing first-class live entertainment in Bunbury, using local talent and expertise. A few of our young people have gone on to perform at a professional level.
More than 130 shows have been produced, the first being “The Desert Song” in 1960 at the Railway Institute in Wittenoom Street. The first show produced the princely profit of ONE POUND ($2).
From these humble beginnings, and with the foresight and hard work of the Founding Members, subsequent committees and member, the group now owns the building and operates the NEW LYRIC THEATRE in Bourke Street – home of the Bunbury Musical Comedy Group.
The New Lyric Theatre is a comfortable 200 seat, airconditioned theatre with full facilities, including orchestra pit, three dressing rooms, green room, licensed bar, modern foyer and kitchen, rehearsal studio, an extensive wardrobe, all technical facilities, and toilets, including disability rails and access ramp.
Here, thousands of people have been entertained and hundreds given the opportunity to express themselves in theatrical endeavours.
The club is run solely by volunteers and is guided by a committee of dedicated members. There are also valuable members who contribute to the running of the group in many other areas such as props, set building, set painting, costumes, promotions, musical direction and show directors and general maintenance.
The group runs a very active program throughout the year. A typical program is two major productions, concerts and other minor productions from time to time.
Other theatre groups and schools also use our venue on occasions.
The aim of the group is to promote dramatic art, music, musical theatre, and musical comedy. To promote, extend, develop, cultivate, and foster drama and music in all its forms.
As a community theatre group, we would hope to also welcome cross promotion with Multicultural Groups and provide opportunities for both young and old to gain experience and develop their own and new skills in all forms of theatre arts and gain confidence and satisfaction. We would also hope to gain valuable ideas and skills from this cross promotion as well.
We provide training for young and old to not only perform but to learn backstage skills in lighting, sound, set/props building, stage management, and front of house management to name just a few.
We also run Musical Theatre classes for 7yrs to 17yrs on Fridays after school culminating in an end of year concert or theatre show. Fees for these classes can be requested by emailing mtclasses7@gmail.com
Some of our productions staged at the New Lyric Theatre since 1995, after renovations were completed following the tornado that partially destroyed our theatre.
